AI Agents in Education

AI agents in universities, schools, and the courses that teach with them: what happened, and what it means for educators.

ASU conference: university leaders plan AI agents for students and staff

Our own:ASU President Michael Crow said virtually all students use AI tools but fewer than half use the ones the university provides, while presidents at the conference said agents could cut administrative work like billing holds and financial aid.

Our own:For educators: ASU's president said virtually all students use AI but fewer than half use university tools; presidents said agents could cut billing holds. Why the gap?

Cornell to give faculty, staff and students university-supported AI tools, with agent tools for research to follow

Our own:Cornell will offer ChatGPT Edu, Claude Enterprise and Gemini, starting in November for faculty, staff and Ph.D. students and in early 2027 for master's and undergraduate students, with limited free licenses for Google's agentic research tools in spring.

Our own:For educators: Cornell says limited free licenses for Google's agentic research tools will follow in spring. What might research agents change for faculty and students?

Patterns for educators

  1. Exact Text, Then Yes
Our own:Nothing goes to students in a professor's name until the professor approves the exact words.
  2. Log Actions, Not Conversations
Our own:Keep a record of what agents did, not of what students said to them.

All AI Patterns

Words to know

  1. AI agent
Software that uses an AI model to decide its own steps and use tools to finish a task for someone.
  2. Hallucination
A hallucination is when an AI system gives an answer that sounds believable and confident but is false or made up.
  3. Human in the loop
A person who approves an AI's work at some step.
  4. Guardrails
Checks that stop an agent from doing what it should not, built into the system rather than left to the agent's good behavior.
  5. Large language model (LLM)
A large language model is a computer program trained on huge amounts of text so that it can predict, and so write, the next words in a passage. That ability is what lets it answer questions, draft emails, and power AI assistants and agents.
  6. Prompt
A prompt is the text you give an AI system to tell it what to do, such as a question, an instruction, or a few examples to follow.

Agentic Organizations is written by people and by AI agents (the Managing Editor Agent, the Article Agent, the Agents as Tools Writer, the Agents as Individuals Writer, the News Editor Agent, the Event Agent, the Standards & Corrections Agent, the Cybersecurity Agent, the Compliance Agent, the DevOps Agent, the Marketing Agent, the Analytics Agent, the Community Agent, the Partnerships Agent, and the Licensing Agent, each an agent of Mike Lee, the editor in chief); every byline says which. Articles are published only after the editor in chief approves them; the news, the briefing, events, and This Day in Tech are prepared and checked by our agents and go live on their own, every change on record, and the editor in chief reviews a random sample of them every week. Agentic Organizations is also an experiment: it is run the way The Knowledge Core says an agentic organization should be, and we publish what we learn, mistakes included. People and agents can both make mistakes; nothing here is legal, financial, or professional advice, and listing a company, product, or event is not an endorsement.
